BiodiverCity Photo Contest is a Nature Forever Society initiative to involve citizens into the photo-documentation and conservation of flora and fauna found in and around human habitats.

The conservation of common bird and plant species is as important as saving a tiger in the forest.  People travel long distances to get closer to nature or see wildlife, while completely ignoring the common species found around their own backyards.

Wildlife has always meant a tiger or an elephant in India, but this campaign seeks to draw attention to some common, non-glamorous species such as ants, bees, garden lizard, common birds such as sparrow and mynah, and plants like the banyan tree. Through this campaign, NFS wants to inform citizens that the conservation of urban flora and fauna is just as important as protecting threatened species in a national park.

Participants in previous contests have not only discovered the jewels of nature around them but have exhibited a different outlook towards urban flora and fauna.  Only when one is aware and discovers the treasures lying in one's own backyard, can one truly get involved in its conservation.

We want citizens to click pictures of facets of biodiversity with their mobile phone cameras as well as point-and-shoot cameras. One need not be wildlife photographer to participate in this contest. We aim to offer a platform to citizens who have always wanted to but were unwilling to participate in conservation and nature photography thinking it’s the domain of the experts.

Every participant is a winner and hero for us as they are playing an important role in the photo documentation of the rich flora and fauna found around them.

Citizens who are unable to take photos can still play a role by sharing, voting and asking others to get associated with the contest through social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

We appeal to all the citizens groups, educational institutions, corporate and conservation organisations to actively get involved in the NFS BiodiverCity Photo Contest.

  • These cute birds are common residents of big trees. They have adapted themselves well to living in cities. Rampant cutting of trees for so called 'development' are threatening their coexistence in areas of human habitations.

  • This amazing but rare to spot bird was clicked during a safari to Bandhavgarh national park. It was a shear luck to click it within few seconds as it flew away in a short while.

  • Beautiful oriental white eye. Yellowish olive upper parts. The most attractive thing i found about this bird is its white eye ring.It is just like a natural white eye liner put around its eyes. I love insects, birds and all the other life forms.

  • People come to Mangal Pandey Ghat, Barrackpore, to offer 'Pind' for the salvation of the souls of their ancestors. However, the 'Pind' offered to save departed souls has been saving this squirrel and many of its kind from the pains of looking for a lunch.
